Massage parlour worker awarded €102,550 after whistleblowing

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

An unnamed massage parlour worker was awarded €102,550 by the Workplace Relations Commission for whistleblower penalisation and other employment breaches, reported on 17 November 2023.

The award included €91,000 for penalisation after she refused her male boss’s demands for sexual services. The adjudicator found a direct link between her refusal and the penalisation, while stating the decision did not find that wrongdoing had actually been committed.

The remaining awards covered loss of earnings, failure to provide a written contract, dismissal without notice and unpaid annual leave. The WRC decision records that the massage parlour cannot be named by order of the adjudicating officer.
