Martin Callinan denied trying to blacken Maurice McCabe's character before the Disclosures Tribunal on 18 May 2018.
The tribunal was examining Supt David Taylor's claim that Mr Callinan instructed a press officer to brief media negatively against the whistleblower. Mr Callinan and former Garda commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan denied the claim.
Mr Callinan also said his “disgusting” comment before the Public Accounts Committee referred to how issues were highlighted, rather than to whistleblowers personally. The tribunal concluded evidence that day and was due to resume questioning on 21 May 2018.
