Mark Sweeney’s appeal against his eight-year sentence for robbery was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 21 February 2017, in a judgment delivered by Mr Justice Edwards.
He had pleaded guilty to robbery before Roscommon Circuit Criminal Court on 9 March 2016 and was sentenced by His Honour Judge Keenan Johnson on 2 June 2016. The sentence was eight years’ imprisonment, with the final two years and six months suspended.
The appeal argued that the sentence was too severe and gave insufficient weight to mitigation, including the early guilty plea and genuine remorse. The Court held that the sentence was generous, including discounts for mitigation and rehabilitation, and dismissed the appeal.
