Maria Doyle was awarded €10,400 after the Workplace Relations Commission found her unfair dismissal complaint against Granby Limited well founded, in a decision dated 1 February 2022. The WRC hearing took place on 26 November 2021.

Doyle had worked as a general operative in Granby’s Sausage Department from 26 March 2018 until her redundancy in July 2020. The company said a pandemic-related downturn led it to cut roles and that Doyle’s position was selected under its redundancy process.

The adjudication officer accepted that Granby had decided to make redundancies, but found that it departed from its stated length-of-service selection approach in Doyle’s case. A less senior worker retained in a trolley role was not shown to have skills that prevented another employee from doing that work, and no risk assessment had been carried out concerning Doyle’s suitability.

The officer concluded that Granby’s reasons were related to Doyle and that redundancy was not the primary reason for her dismissal. He found the complaint well founded and awarded compensation equal to six months’ salary, €10,400.
