The Workplace Relations Commission ordered Oriel House Hotel Ltd to pay Margaret O’Sullivan €5,000 for discrimination on Traveller grounds, reported on 9 November 2023.

The adjudicator also ordered €3,000 each for Theresa O’Sullivan and Joseph O’Donovan, finding that Theresa was discriminated against on Traveller grounds and Joseph by association. O’Donovan was O’Sullivan’s long-term partner and was not a member of the Traveller community.

The complaints concerned the hotel’s refusal to provide accommodation and meals to the party for a family celebration in Ballincollig, Co Cork. The hotel denied discrimination and said a reservationist had made a mistake when taking the booking.
