A Dublin man was fined and given a suspended prison sentence at Bray District Court, after admitting to a series of alcohol-related offences in Wicklow, including theft, public intoxication and failing to appear before the court.

Soufian Bin Esa (30) of Flat 4, 2 Hatch Hall, Dublin 2 was charged with four offences at Bray District Court, including theft (alcohol to the value of €11) at Tesco, Greystones, failing to appear before the court, failure to pay a fine for intoxication in a public place, and theft (alcohol to the value of in excess of €100) from Tesco, Greystones.

Mr Bin Esa’s solicitor told the court that her client was a Moroccan national who moved to Ireland in 2017. Mr Bin Esa had been struggling with an addiction to alcohol during the time when the offences took place and had begun drinking heavily since his daughter went into care in 2022.

The court heard Mr Bin Esa was now clean from alcohol and had completed a program in Bray to help “tackle his addiction issues”. It was also stated that during the time of the incidents he was living with his partner who was also dealing with substance use issues.

Mr Bin Esa was “extremely remorseful” and hadn’t come to the attention of An Garda Síochána as he was “in custody for a long time”.

Judge David Kennedy struck out the charge of theft of alcohol worth €11. For failing to appear before the court, Mr Bin Esa pleaded guilty and was fined €500. He was sentenced to two days imprisonment for failing to pay a fine for public intoxication and received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, for the theft of alcohol valued at more than €100.
