Man pleads guilty to public order offence after verbally abusing garda
The Wicklow PeopleA man charged with assaulting his boyfriend and breaching a protection order has pleaded guilty to a public order offence, after verbally assaulting a garda.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at a sitting of Bray District Court charged with common assault, two counts of breaching a protection order and one public order offence.
A garda inspector informed the court that the charges relate to incidents involving the accused’s boyfriend, who was present in court and wished to withdraw the complaints.
He told the court that he had not been placed under duress and wished to withdraw his statement, noting that he still has a protection order in place.
However, the accused pleaded guilty to the public order matter, which arose in the aftermath of the alleged domestic incident.
The court heard that when gardaí responded to the incident in December 2025, they found the defendant standing on the road intoxicated before he told a garda to “fuck off, you fat c**t”.
Sergeant Mick Dee said that the accused has five previous convictions, all for public order offences.
A probation report was handed into the court, with solicitor for the accused, Joe Maguire, stating that the report assessed his client as being at a high risk of reoffending.
He argued that his client’s previous convictions have hampered him from joining his local Tidy Towns committee and from “getting education and insight into his problems”.
The court was told that a new probation report would benefit the accused.
The judge adjourned the matter until late October to allow the defendant to “come back before the court after doing some of his aspirations”.
