A man accused of Islamic State links lost his deportation challenge in the High Court. The proceedings were reported on 24 June 2016. He denied the State’s claims that he had consulted with senior violent extremist leaders outside Ireland, represented a threat to national security or recruited members for the self-styled Islamic State. He had argued that removal to Jordan would expose him to torture and that the Minister for Justice had unlawfully refused to decide his asylum application.
Mr Justice Richard Humphreys dismissed all grounds of the action. The judge found that the man had not persuaded the minister of his account of previous ill-treatment or a real risk of future ill-treatment, and had not shown that the deportation decision was unreasonable or unlawful. The matter was adjourned for a week to allow consideration of an appeal to the Court of Appeal.
