A 53-year-old man was sentenced in the Central Criminal Court to 11 years for sexual assault and child cruelty offences involving five children; the final two and a half years were suspended for two and a half years on strict conditions. He had pleaded guilty to representative counts from an indictment of 107 charges.
The guilty pleas included sexual assault counts involving two boys over periods between 2004 and 2013, child cruelty counts involving another boy between 2013 and 2015, and sexual assault counts involving two girls in 2015. The victims wished to remain anonymous.
Ms Justice Caroline Biggs said the abuse involved coercion, control and intimidation and had caused profound psychological damage. She identified the multiple incidents and victims, degradation of children in the man’s care, and breach of trust as aggravating features.
The judge said she suspended part of the sentence to encourage rehabilitation and ensure supervision as the man returned to the community.
