A man was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, with the final two years suspended on strict conditions, after pleading guilty to assault causing harm, threats to kill or cause serious harm, coercive control and threats to publish intimate images without consent. He was sentenced by Mr Justice David Keane on Friday, October 31, 2025.
The offences took place between April and December 2022. The Central Criminal Court heard that he moved into his partner’s rented home in Co Wexford within weeks of meeting her and forced her younger brother to leave. He controlled what she wore and ate, and controlled her money. After she moved out, he sent almost 5,000 messages over four days, including threats to kill her and publish intimate images.
A probation report assessed him as at high risk of reoffending in relation to emotional abuse and coercive control. The judge identified the guilty plea as the most significant mitigating factor and gave some credit for co-operation with gardaí, admissions in interview and an apology letter, which the woman did not accept.
