A 22-year-old man who cannot be named because he was 15 at the time of the offence appeared for sentencing at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court. He pleaded guilty to possessing child sexual abuse material on the second day of his trial, which began on March 3, 2025. The proceedings were reported on July 16, 2025.
Judge Eoin Garavan imposed 100 hours of community service in lieu of two months in prison and deferred sentence under Section 100 of the Criminal Justice Act. He adjourned the case until November 7 to determine the man’s suitability for community service.
On June 6, 2018, the accused opened a video link containing malware on his mother’s laptop. He told her he had been hacked, and the matter was reported to Gardaí. The laptop was examined in 2021; Gardaí found a child sexual abuse video in its recycle bin. The report said it had been accessed two months before the hack and was unrelated to the sextortion incident.
The investigating garda said the video was on the extreme side of Category One and had been moved to the recycle bin by the defendant on April 9, 2018. Arrested on February 15, 2022, the man made no admissions and denied downloading child sexual abuse material. Judge Garavan said the man had never explained how the video came to be on the laptop, but there was no evidence he had shared or forwarded it.
Defence senior counsel Barry White said his client’s health issues from an early age had left him somewhat isolated from society. He was assessed as a low risk of reoffending and had no previous convictions. Mr White said the man could initially have been dealt with under the Juvenile Liaison Scheme, but his mother was unfamiliar with the process and it was not taken up.
