A Killarney man is ‘extremely contrite’ for calling a garda a ‘Kerry prostitute’ Killarney District Court has heard.

Denis Sullivan (53) of 3 Ashe Close, Ballydribeen, Killarney, pled guilty to using threatening and abusive behaviour and to an intoxication charge arising out of the incident in the town.

The court heard Mr Sullivan became belligerent when approached by gardai at 2.20am on July 12, 2025, on Main Street and referred to Garda Gillian MacEoin as a ‘Kerry prostitute’. He had a lot of alcohol taken, the court was told and gardaí tried to reason with him.

“He became very aggressive to gardai,” said Sgt Stephen O’Brien, who noted the defendant’s 36 prior convictions.

These included numerous road traffic violations and a conviction for public order in Killarney in 2018.

Solicitor Padraig O’Connell told the judge his client was ‘extremely contrite’.

“Mr Sullivan has taken steps to rehabilitate,” said Mr O’Connell. “He’s doing his best to get over it.”

Mr O’Connell stressed that Mr Sullivan had taken responsibility and shown remorse.

“He apologised to the two gardai in person before the court this morning,” said the solicitor.

Judge Mark O’Connell convicted and fined Mr Sullivan €300 for the offence of using threatening and abusive behaviour.
