Man disqualified after no insurance detection in Letterkenny

By Chris McNulty, Donegal Daily

A man has been put off the road after being caught driving without insurance in Donegal.

The case of Isse Idow was before Letterkenny District Court.

Idow, a 24-year-old with an address at Park Street, Dundalk, was not present in court or legally represented.

Garda Cassidy gave evidence in relation to an incident on January 18, 2026 at Lower Main Street, Letterkenny.

Garda Cassidy told the court that he stopped a Hyundai i40 at 11.20pm after it flagged on the ANPR (automatic number place recognition) device as having no insurance.

Idow produced a full driving licence and told Garda Cassidy that he was electing to produce a certificate of insurance or a certificate of exemption at Dundalk Garda Station. However, no documents were produced.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins confirmed that Idow has no previous convictions.

On a charge of failing to produce insurance, Idow was fined €100 and given four months to pay.

In respect of the charge of driving without insurance, Judge Emile Daly fined Idow €450 and gave him four months to pay.

Judge Daly also disqualified Idow from driving for a period of two years.
