Man deported to Jordan over alleged Islamic State links

By Niamh Kearney

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was deported from Dublin Airport at lunchtime on 6 July 2016 and arrived in Jordan that evening, the Department of Justice confirmed.

At a late sitting of the High Court on 4 July 2016, Mr Justice Richard Humphreys refused to allow him to bring an appeal before the Court of Appeal.

His lawyers applied to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg on 5 July 2016 for an emergency Rule 39 injunction to prevent his deportation. The Strasbourg court refused the application.

The Department of Justice said gardaí had identified him as the main recruiter in Ireland for the so-called Islamic State militant group. It also described him as a facilitator for people within the State wishing to travel to conflict zones. In his High Court challenge, he denied claims that he had consulted with senior violent extremist leaders outside Ireland or recruited members for Islamic extremist groups.

He told the court he had been tortured in Jordan during the 1990s because of his political activities and faced being tortured if returned there.

The court heard he had lived in Ireland since 2000 on the basis of having an Irish citizen child. The report said authorities had decided the previous year not to renew his residency permit because the child was living with his mother outside the State. The proceedings were reported on 7 July 2016.
