Man appears at Wicklow court accused of hitting partner in face
The Wicklow PeopleA man accused of assaulting his partner allegedly hit her in the face, a court has heard.
Brandon Cowan (27), of no fixed abode, appeared at a sitting of Bray District Court charged with one count of assault causing harm.
The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) directed that the matter be dealt with at District Court level, rather than being sent forward to the Circuit Criminal Court.
Assault causing harm carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment in the Circuit Criminal Court.
However, if the case is kept in the District Court, the court has more limited sentencing powers and can only impose a maximum of 12 months imprisonment for a single offence.
It is alleged that on January 10, 2026, gardaí received a complaint from the accused’s partner claiming she was assaulted.
Sergeant Mick Dee said it is alleged that the complainant suffered bruising to the right side of her face. He also noted that no medical report was presented to the court.
Barrister for the accused, Thomas Finnerty, requested that a disclosure order be made to John Quinn Solicitors.
Judge David Kennedy adjourned the matter until May 11 to allow the accused to enter a plea, or for a hearing date to be set.
