A 42-year-old man has appeared in court following a series of incidents which occurred in Dundalk on Saturday.

Ryan McLaughlin, of no fixed abode, is accused of a robbery and a serious assault at separate locations in the town’s north end.

He was brought in custody before Drogheda Court on Monday when Gardaí objected to his bail application.

Mr McLaughlin is charged with assaulting a male causing him harm and theft of €155.53 groceries at Lidl, St Helena; and with robbery of a €5,000 cash register and €750 cash at Go Petrol Station, Newry Road, on March 7 last.

Det Gda James Smith said it will be alleged that at 4.30pm the accused entered Lidl wearing a hoodie. CCTV showed him putting a number of items in a cart before pushing it outside.

It will also be alleged that a staff member attempted to stop him. A struggle ensued and both fell to the ground. Mr McLaughlin hit the other man.

Det Gda Smith continued that at 5pm Gardaí received a report of an incident at Go Petrol Station.

It will be alleged that three males entered the shop. Mr McLaughlin and one of the men approached the counter and asked for cigarettes.

The third man threw a bottle of cider at a staff member. The defendant went behind the counter and removed the cash register.

It will be alleged that all three left in an Audi A3.

Det Gda Smith said what allegedly occurred was captured on CCTV.

The defendant was subsequently arrested and charged.

Judge Nicola Andrews remanded Ryan McLaughlin in custody to Dundalk Court today (Wednesday) for DPP directions with consent to bail in his own bond of €1,000 with €500 cash lodged.

Conditons include that he stays out of Co. Louth except for court appearances.
