Louth motorist ‘completely ignoring’ Road Traffic legislation jailed for four months after appeal fails

By Francis Carroll, Irish Independent

A 38-year-old man has been jailed for four months and disqualified from driving for six years after his appeal failed against the severity of a no insurance conviction.

Vipin Moonoosawmy, The Beeches, Clogherhead, Co. Louth, was detected at Platin Terrace, Drogheda, on January 13, 2026.

Sgt Diarmuid Maguire said that he made a U-turn at a checkpoint and was stopped. He told gardaí that he couldn’t get a lift to work.

Dundalk Circuit Court heard that the appellant has 14 previous convictions, three for uninsured driving, and at the time a four-year ban was in effect from Trim Court last November when Mr Moonoosawmy also received a two-month sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Counsel said that he had no excuse and admitted the offending. He was in difficult personal and financial circumstances.

Mr Moonoosawmy took the decision to drive his sister’s Kia after a friend couldn’t bring him to work in MCC, a Drogheda printing company.

His mother passed away recently, while he was of assistance to his sister who was present in court.

Judge Sarah Berkeley sympathised with the appellant on his loss.

She said that he had an appalling history, and was driving while disqualified. He was completely ignoring Road Traffic legislation and putting people at risk.

The district court order was affirmed.

“You can’t drive unless you’re insured,” the judge remarked.

Mr Moonoosawmy was remanded back to Trim Court in respect of that matter.
