The High Court has confirmed the Medical Council's decision to remove psychiatrist Amirul Mohd Yunos from the register of medical practitioners following his convictions for sexual offences involving a child.
Yunos, who was registered in the General Division of the Medical Council register, was serving a prison sentence at Midlands Prison when the confirmation application came before Mr Justice David Barniville on 13 April 2026.
The Medical Council became involved after receiving a complaint in September 2023 concerning allegations arising at a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services building in Clonskeagh, Dublin. The High Court suspended Yunos's medical registration on an interim basis, with his consent, on 20 October 2023 while the statutory process continued.
Yunos later pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to eight charges: one of sexual exploitation of a child, one of meeting a child for the purpose of sexual exploitation and six of engaging in a sexual act with a child. In December 2024, he was sentenced to eight years and six months' imprisonment on the six latter counts, with the other two offences taken into consideration.
The Medical Council subsequently concluded that Yunos had permanently ceased to be a fit and proper person to practise medicine. It said the offences were at the highest level of seriousness and involved a profound abuse of trust, including trust arising from his position as a doctor and psychiatrist.
Yunos did not attend the Medical Council meeting at which cancellation was decided and did not attend the High Court confirmation hearing, although the court was satisfied that he had been notified.
Under the Medical Practitioners Act 2007, the High Court was required to confirm the Council's decision unless there was good reason not to do so. Mr Justice Barniville found none and confirmed cancellation of Yunos's registration. The ruling concerns his professional registration; it does not alter the criminal convictions or sentence.
