Limerick man with 'considerable CV' tells judge 'it's great to see you'

By Bridin Ni Fhearraigh-Joyce, Limerick Leader

A MAN who interrupted court proceedings out of turn told Judge Patricia Harney “It’s great to see you”.

In reply, the judge commented: “I see you’re not in custody, which is an improvement.”

Martin Blunnie, aged 37, of no fixed abode, was described as a “veteran” of the court system by Judge Harney.

The man was before Limerick District Court for a number of offences, including two counts of interfering with a mechanically propelled vehicle (MPV) in the car park of the Crescent Shopping Centre at 3.15am on April 25, 2026.

Prosecuting Sergeant Denis Waters said Mr Blunnie was pulling door handles.

No damage was caused and he did not gain access to any of the vehicles.

The man was also charged with two thefts from Mace on Catherine Street, Limerick, on March 21, 2026. The sergeant said sweets worth €7.80, were stolen and that they were not recovered.

Mr Blunnie was further charged with a section four public order offence arising from an incident at Henry Street, Limerick on March 22, 2025.

Sgt Waters said Mr Blunnie was on the footpath and could not get himself up and out of the road.

“When he did try to get up, he stumbled and almost fell in front of a car,” he said.

Mr Blunnie nodded as the facts were set out.

The sergeant outlined that the he has 156 previous convictions, including 67 section four thefts, one for robbery, one for forgery, 37 section four public order offences and two convictions for attempting to interfere with an MPV

Judge Harney commented that Mr Blunnie has a “considerable CV”.

“Mr Blunnie, you’re a veteran,” she added.

The defendant said he’d like a custodial sentence, but asked for it to be as lenient as possible.

Judge Harney said: “Prison is not meant to be pleasant.”

She imposed a two week sentence for the theft charge and a €100 fine for the public order offence. The remaining charge was taken into consideration.
