Liam Evans received a two-year suspended sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and was ordered to offer the woman €5,000 within a year. The proceedings were reported on 20 March 2023.

He had pleaded guilty to three counts of laundering the proceeds of crime by cashing cheques at Ulster Bank in Dublin Airport. The court heard that he cashed five cheques totalling €23,500 between April 2019 and March 2021.

The cheques were written by a woman in her 80s who was defrauded by men offering building work. Most of the promised work was not done, and she ultimately paid more than €44,000. The court heard that the stolen money had not been recovered.

Evans’s counsel said gardaí had accepted that Evans was genuinely carrying out some work and that about €9,000 of the money he received had been genuine.
