Liam Brannigan was on trial at the Special Criminal Court charged with conspiring to murder Gary Hanley at a location in the State between 15 September and 6 November 2017. He pleaded not guilty. The proceedings were reported on 10 October 2019.
Detective Sergeant Declan O’Connell told the court he coordinated the collection and viewing of CCTV for the investigation. He said about 3,500 hours of footage had been collected from premises across Dublin. He accepted that he had not considered the Data Protection Act or the data protection of members of the public.
The court heard that the prosecution intended to show a CCTV montage lasting up to 48 minutes after all the evidence had been heard. John Berry BL, for Brannigan, said the defence was taking issue with the footage’s admissibility.
The report said three men who had previously pleaded guilty to conspiring to murder Hanley had been jailed. Luke Wilson, who also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a Beretta handgun with intent to endanger life, received 11 years. Alan Wilson received six years. Joseph Kelly, who also admitted a weapons charge, received a total of 12 years.
Brannigan’s trial was due to continue on 11 October 2019 before Mr Justice Paul Coffey, presiding, with Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin and Judge James Faughnan.
