A Garda who pleaded guilty to two offences in relation to a fatal hit-and-run has had his legal aid extended to cover a psychiatric report before sentencing.

Michael Ball, with an address at Drogheda Garda Station, admitted dangerous driving causing the death of Niall MacEneaney (42) and failing to keep the vehicle at the scene on the Rathmullen Road in Drogheda on March 17, 2024.

Mr MacEneaney was a GAA coach and former Louth hurler.

The defendant, who is suspended from duty, affirmed signed guilty pleas when he appeared before Dundalk Circuit Court last month.

On Friday, barrister Cliodhna Breen applied to have legal aid extended to cover a psychiatric report for Mr Ball, who is on bail and due back before the court on May 5.

She said a report would be ready in time.

Prosecuting counsel Steven Dixon consented as long as it did not delay sentencing.

Judge Dara Hayes granted the application.

He said that he will hear evidence the next day but may not finalise the case.

The defendant is already on legal aid for a solicitor, barrister and senior counsel.
