Landlord ordered to pay €10,000 for HAP discrimination

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

An unnamed landlord was ordered by the Workplace Relations Commission to pay €10,000 for discrimination after refusing to sign a tenant’s Housing Assistance Payment papers.

The WRC upheld the complaint under the housing assistance ground of the Equal Status Act, with adjudicating officer Aideen Collard finding the refusal amounted to less favourable treatment.

The landlord said the flat’s poor condition meant he could not honestly sign the form, but Collard preferred the tenant’s evidence and rejected that defence.

The award included compensation for loss of earnings and the difference in the tenant’s €3,127 rent contribution. The proceedings were reported on 20 October 2022.
