Krzystof Grzegorski, 22, received a mandatory life sentence from Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy for the murder of Bogdan Michalkiewicz, 41. The killing happened on 13 May 2013 at the victim’s home in Westside Apartments in Letterkenny, Co Donegal. The proceedings were reported on 5 July 2016.
He pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but the prosecution did not accept that plea. Jurors deliberated for a little over five hours before returning a unanimous murder verdict.
Evidence at trial described 46 wounds to Bogdan Michalkiewicz’s head and face, including stab wounds. Pathologist Dr Alison Armour described other injuries as consistent with punches, kicks or blows with a blunt object. Counsel for Krzystof Grzegorski argued that intoxication left him unaware of his actions during the attack and described his conduct as irrational and illogical.
Dariusz Weckowicz, 51, was acquitted of murder on the judge’s direction. According to the report, CCTV recorded him in Letterkenny with Krzystof Grzegorski that day. Blood spatter on his clothing placed him at the scene when the killing occurred. Brendan Grehan SC, defending Dariusz Weckowicz, argued that this established presence without showing participation in the attack. He suggested his client had been unconscious on the sofa. Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy directed the acquittal after finding that the evidence could not support a guilty verdict.
