A Kilkenny man had four convictions for rape and sexual assault quashed by the Court of Appeal, reported on 12 December 2017. The court overturned three rape convictions and one sexual-assault conviction linked to alleged offending before 1 January 1999.
The court dismissed his appeal against the remaining convictions, after considering information about rent-supplement payments that became available after his trial. It said the material might have affected the jury’s assessment of when the complainant moved into the rented house, while recording that the wider evidence included allegations of violence and threats. The court said it would address retrial and sentence later.
