A judge fined a man €350 who is “his own worst enemy” for threatening and abusive language at Listowel District Court on Thursday.

Mr Richard Loughnane (39) of 2 College Cross, Listowel appeared before judge David Waters on charges of intoxication that would give rise to endanger himself or others and for threatening or abusive language.

He was observed “roaring and shouting” at College Cross on July 27, Inspector Tim O’Keeffe told the court.

His solicitor Padraig O’Connell said his client was receiving treatment and noted Mr Loughnane had support from a partner who appeared in court alongside him.

Mr Loughnane had 20 previous convictions, including five for threatening or abusive language and a prison sentence for assault.

“He’s no help to himself,” said the judge.

“And certainly no help to me,” said the solicitor. “He is his own worst enemy at the best of times and the lady who is with him, she’s long suffering.”

Judge Waters fined Mr Loughnane €320 for the threatening and abusive language, taking into account the other charge.
