Kenneth Collopy’s murder appeal dismissed by Court of Appeal

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Kenneth Collopy’s appeal against his murder conviction was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on 5 May 2016. The conviction arose from the shooting of Daniel Fitzgerald at Cloughnadromin, Ballysimon, Co Limerick, on 8 December 2009.

The court held that a video-recorded witness statement was properly admitted, that an accomplice warning was not required, and that the jury had been comprehensively directed on recklessness and intent. It also found that the guilty verdict was not perverse. Collopy had admitted the unlawful killing but denied murder, and was serving a life sentence imposed after his 2011 conviction.
