This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Karl Ennis was fined €2,000 and disqualified from driving for three months for careless driving at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 8 October 2024.

The collision occurred on Mitchelstown Road in Co Dublin on 14 April 2021, when Ennis’s car collided with John Keane’s motorcycle as he turned right from Northwest Business Park. Judge Pauline Codd said Ennis had not seen the motorcycle and had failed to pay sufficient attention, while noting that the road’s gradient and the motorcycle’s high speed reduced his culpability.

Ennis had pleaded guilty to careless driving. The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions accepted the plea to the summary offence after initially charging him with careless driving causing death, allowing the Keane family to give victim impact evidence.

Annette Keane told the court that her son’s death left a void in the family. Judge Codd noted their loss and their compassion towards Ennis when imposing the sentence.
