Karen Duffy said she was not directed to report that abuse allegation was false

By Fionn Kelly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Karen Duffy told the Charleton tribunal she was never directed to inform the Garda Commissioner’s office that a serious sexual abuse allegation against Maurice McCabe was false. The proceedings were reported on 26 July 2017.

In May 2014, Duffy was instructed to forward an earlier communication reporting the allegation. She said she was not instructed to forward a later communication after a Tusla error was discovered.

Duffy also said notes of an August 2014 meeting were shown to Kieran Kenny before she typed them and that he agreed they were accurate. Cormac Quinlan told the tribunal there had been failures in oversight and governance, while Rosalie Smith-Lynch said the disclosed surname alone was insufficient to identify the person who made the allegation.
