A jury was due to resume deliberations on Monday in the trial of Jonathan Gill at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. The proceedings were reported on 7 April 2017.

Gill pleaded not guilty to falsely imprisoning Warren Nawn, Jean Marie Nawn and their ten-week-old baby in Drogheda in August 2011.

The prosecution alleged that Gill was one of five people who held the family hostage in their home before moving them to a shed about a 90-minute drive away. The case concerned an alleged €660,000 robbery at the postal worker’s workplace.

Prosecuting lawyers said the evidence against Gill was almost entirely circumstantial but, taken together, conclusively proved his guilt. The prosecution said it could link him to the kidnapping through his association with two men who were forensically linked to the crime and a car linked to him that was in the area on the day in question.

The jury was told there was no evidence placing Gill at the crime scenes and no forensic evidence directly linking him to the offence. Defence counsel said there was no evidence linking him to the crime.
