A jury has been discharged in the Central Criminal Court trial of Liam O’Leary, who has pleaded not guilty to murdering John Casserley at a Peter McVerry Trust housing unit in Ballina, Co Mayo, between 23 and 24 October 2024. The trial began eight days before the discharge, after the prosecution opened its case on 10 March.

Ms Justice Melanie Greally told jurors the trial could not continue because of an “unfortunate situation” and excused them from further jury service for five years. The case is due to be mentioned again on 15 April.
