Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced Dylan Pennie, 34, to four years, suspending the final two years on conditions. Judge Martina Baxter said: “There have to be consequences.” The proceedings were reported on 15 May 2025.

Pennie pleaded guilty to possessing €575,000 worth of drugs and laundering €52,320, the proceeds of criminal conduct, at his parents’ Coolock home. The offences took place on 5 May 2024.

Pennie, an air-conditioning engineer with no previous convictions, said he had been told to hold the drugs and cash to pay a €4,000 drug debt. Under cross-examination by defence counsel Paul Murray SC, Garda Enda O’Reilly accepted that Pennie had a drug debt at the time. He agreed that a drug debt leads to pressure and consequences, and that people are told, rather than asked, to hold drugs.

The haul included mainly cannabis, as well as cocaine, ketamine, MDMA and benzodiazepine. Judge Baxter said there were factors allowing her to depart from the mandatory minimum sentence.
