Judge Eoin Garavan sentenced Gerry Norman, 24, to four years in prison, with the final two years suspended, for attacking two strangers in Ballina. He also imposed a 20-month sentence for assaulting Patrick Ruttledge, to run concurrently. The sentencing followed Norman’s guilty pleas to assault causing serious harm and assault causing harm.

The judge described the assault on Dylan Tolan as “utter pure white rage” and said the potentially lethal blow could not go unpunished. Tolan suffered skull fractures, bleeding and bruising on the brain, and lasting hearing loss and tinnitus. Norman also assaulted Ruttledge, who suffered dental injuries.

The court heard that Norman had been under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. His counsel said Norman was remorseful, had attended anger management and was no longer using drugs or alcohol. The judge acknowledged his progress and the compensation provided to the victims, but said the seriousness of the violence required a custodial sentence.
