John Murphy was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the sexual assault and rape of his daughter. The proceedings were reported on 20 July 2018. The offences took place between 1988 and 2010.

Murphy pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and 15 counts of sexual assault. Seventy further counts of sexual assault were taken into account in sentencing.

Mr Justice Michael White described the abuse as regular and intense, and said its most serious aggravating circumstance was its effect on Murphy’s daughter. In mitigation, he considered Murphy’s guilty pleas, genuine remorse and serious health problems.
