John Kelly was jailed for cannabis cultivation at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, receiving a three-year prison term with the final six months suspended. The sentence was backdated to 17 May 2022, when he went into custody.

The proceedings were reported on 6 March 2023. Kelly pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis at Old Farm Yard, Johnstown Kennedy, Rathcoole, Co Dublin, on 26 November 2018.

The court heard that Kelly supervised a grow house containing 140 cannabis plants and saplings. His defence said he owned a legitimate stud business with 35 stables, and the sentence required continued engagement with the Probation Service over his addiction.
