John Hannigan trial jury to consider murder verdict

By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

John Hannigan was on trial for murder and assault causing harm as the jury was due to consider its verdict on 28 February 2014.

He denied murdering Anthony Fallon and the separate assault causing harm charge, which related to 18 January 2012. The report said Hannigan told Gardaí that Fallon’s death was on his hands, but Hannigan later said he had panicked during those interviews and denied assaulting him.

The defence sought not-guilty verdicts and pointed to Hannigan’s false claim to have a karate black belt as evidence of unreliability. Mr. Justice Paul Carney was due to complete his charge before the jury retired. The proceedings were reported on 28 February 2014.
