John Coughlan jailed for murder of Limerick delivery man
This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.
John Coughlan was jailed for life for murdering bread delivery man Daniel Treacy in Limerick. The proceedings were reported on 22 October 2013.
The report said Treacy was shot four times at close range at a Topaz petrol station on the morning of 22 February 2010. Psychiatric evidence indicated that Coughlan was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and that his responsibility could have been substantially diminished, making the offence manslaughter rather than murder, but the jury rejected that defence and convicted him of murder. Mr Justice Paul Carney imposed the life sentence.
