Jehovah’s Witness patient’s transfusion orders discharged

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

An unnamed Jehovah’s Witness patient had High Court orders allowing a blood transfusion discharged after his condition improved, in a decision reported on 17 April 2024.

The orders had allowed the hospital to give blood or blood products if necessary. At the earlier hearing, the court was told the patient lacked capacity to make an informed treatment decision and no advance care directive had been provided to the hospital.

When the matter returned to court, the hospital’s counsel said the patient had improved, had not needed a transfusion and had regained capacity to choose his treatment. The High Court president agreed that the orders were no longer required and discharged them.

The court kept in place orders preventing the media from identifying the patient and the hospital.
