By Cathal Brosnan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

James Flynn was ordered to face retrial on a conspiracy to steal a Volkswagen Passat at the Supreme Court, reported on 16 October 2026. The car was taken from a property in Clogherhead, Co Louth, in January 2013, and was later used in the Lordship Credit Union robbery during which Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was shot dead.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Director of Public Prosecutions could proceed on the amended charge concerning the Passat, but not on the wider conspiracy. It ordered Flynn to be retried at the Special Criminal Court on the amended indictment relating to events on 22 and 23 January 2013.
