James Doyle was jailed for three and a half years for dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 28 March 2023. Judge Martin Nolan imposed the sentence.

Doyle pleaded guilty to the charge. The offence happened on Cromwellsfort Road, Walkinstown, on 23 April 2020, when he struck Emily Doyle. The report said the evidence suggested he had been travelling up to 130 km/h in a 50 km/h urban area.

The garda agreed with defence counsel that there had been no showing off or reckless conduct and that the issue was speed. Doyle was fully insured, had a full licence and was not intoxicated; his counsel said he had attempted to swerve and avoid contact and that a forensic report recorded a reduction in speed.

The proceedings were reported on 11 April 2023. The sentence took account of Doyle’s co-operation, remorse and work history, as well as Emily Doyle’s serious injuries and lengthy recovery.
