James Dingle was jailed for 14 months for dangerous driving causing death at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, in a report published on 29 March 2019. He struck Maureen Creaner, aged 92, as she crossed Navan Road, Cabra, to buy a newspaper. The court heard he had been driving at 64kmph in a 50kmph zone, while his phone use indicated a severe lack of sleep. A test found him barely over the drink-driving limit. Dingle pleaded guilty. He was also disqualified from driving for four years.
Judge Martin Nolan said Dingle had known he had been drinking and was tired, and had made decisions for which he had to take responsibility. The judge also considered that Dingle remained at the scene, co-operated with gardaí and made full admissions.
