Irish Government considers revising Hooded Men ruling

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The Irish Government was considering whether to ask the European Court of Human Rights to revise its 1978 Ireland v United Kingdom ruling, RTÉ reported on 2 December 2014. The decision concerned evidence about the treatment of 14 internees during interrogation in Northern Ireland.

New material from the British national archives was reported to show that the court had relied on misleading evidence about the use of interrogation techniques. Under Rule 80, the State had until 4 December to apply for revision.

The High Court was also due to hear the men’s judicial-review proceedings on 2 December 2014, after the case was adjourned to await the Government’s decision. The Government’s legal representatives said its review of the documentation was continuing.

This report covers an earlier stage of the case. Later developments are not reported here.
