International Transport Workers’ Federation case struck out over fishers’ exploitation

By Rory Hanlon

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

The High Court struck out the International Transport Workers’ Federation’s case over alleged exploitation of non-EEA fishers on 30 April 2019. The proceedings followed mediation between the federation and Government departments over the employment scheme.

The settlement provides for employment contracts and approval letters in fishers’ native languages as well as English, with clear information on pay, working hours, rest periods and complaint procedures. It also provides for employment transfers without an existing employer’s consent and monitoring of the scheme by an oversight committee.
