At the Central Criminal Court on 4 December 2023, Mr Justice Paul Burns sentenced Ian Connaghan to nine years’ imprisonment, with the final year suspended for three years, for the manslaughter of Michael Mulvey. Daniel Connaghan received five years, with the final year suspended for three years, for causing serious harm to Mr Mulvey.
Both brothers had pleaded not guilty to murder. In August 2023, a unanimous jury acquitted them of murder, but found Ian Connaghan guilty of manslaughter and Daniel Connaghan guilty of intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm.
The attacks took place on the Navan Road in Dublin on 14 November 2019. Mr Mulvey died on 27 November 2019. The judge described the assaults as cowardly and said Daniel Connaghan could consider himself very lucky to have avoided a manslaughter conviction.
