Hryhorii Sryotenko was sentenced to 14 years in prison, with the final two years suspended, for the attempted murder of his former partner, Viktoriia Pavlenko. The sentence was backdated to January 2024, when he first entered custody. The sentencing proceedings were reported on 14 April 2026.
Sryotenko pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Limerick, on 20 October 2025. The offence took place at Banna Beach Holiday Homes, Ardfert, Co Kerry, on 13 January 2024. He had previously been charged with false imprisonment, assault causing serious harm and producing a knife during a dispute.
In her victim impact statement, Ms Pavlenko described waking to find Sryotenko sitting on her with a knife. She said he demanded the truth about a supposed lover before stabbing her. She said she had no lover and that his son heard her screams, came into the room and saved her. The court heard she had 15 stab wounds; she underwent surgery and spent weeks in hospital.
Defence counsel Mark Nicholas said Sryotenko had developed an unshakeable and incorrect belief that Ms Pavlenko was being unfaithful. Counsel said his client accepted carrying out the assault but denied having intended to kill her, despite his guilty plea.
Mr Justice David Keane identified the severity of the injuries, the former intimate relationship, the attack in the home and Sryotenko arming himself with a long kitchen knife as aggravating factors. He said the guilty plea was the most significant mitigating factor.
