Hospital consultants settled their breach of contract case in the High Court, with the agreement reported on 15 June 2018.

The settlement provides retrospective payments for consultants who lodged claims, while adding €62m annually to the consultant pay bill from 2019.

The State’s arrears payments were estimated at €182m and will be phased across 2019 and 2020, according to the Department of Finance.

The agreement does not apply to consultants recruited after 2012, an exclusion the Irish Medical Organisation said left an unresolved pay issue.
