Gerry Adams won €100,000 in a defamation action against the BBC at the High Court, with the jury verdict reported on 3 June 2025.

The jury found that the BBC defamed Adams by publishing an allegation that he sanctioned the 2006 murder of Denis Donaldson. The BBC’s defence that the publication was fair, reasonable and in the public interest was rejected.

On 2 June 2025, Mr Justice Alexander Owens ordered the BBC to pay €50,000 of the award and €250,000 towards Adams’s legal costs while a possible appeal is considered. Payment of the remaining damages and costs was stayed pending any appeal.
