Gerald McQuillan jailed for endangerment after State appeal

By Ruairí Dolan

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gerald McQuillan was resentenced for endangerment at the Court of Appeal on 11 October 2024, receiving three and a half years with the final 12 months suspended.

The sentence leaves two and a half years to serve, consecutive to the sentence already imposed, with credit for time already served in this case. McQuillan pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to endangerment, assault, criminal damage and trespass arising from offending on 5 January 2021.

The appeal court quashed the original 18-month sentence, which Circuit Court Judge James O’Donohue had imposed on 30 April 2024. Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy set a five-year headline sentence for endangerment before reducing it to three and a half years, citing mitigation and totality.

The court said the endangerment occurred while McQuillan was on bail and put his then partner and other road users at risk. The report says he had 79 previous convictions.
