A garda who affirmed guilty pleas in relation to a fatal hit and run will be sentenced next May.

Michael Ball appeared before Dundalk Circuit Court on Monday when he affirmed guilty pleas he signed in the district court last week to dangerous driving causing the death of GAA coach Niall McEneaney (42) and to failing to keep a vehicle at the scene at Rathmullen Road, Drogheda, on March 17, 2024.

The defendant, with an address c/o Drogheda Garda Station, Fr Connolly Way, Drogheda, was remanded on the same bail terms to May 5.

Roderick O’Hanlon SC said that Mr Ball, who is suspended from duty, wished to express his remorse and regret for the manner in which he responded on the day.

He was also anxious that the case be dealt with in a manner that would minimise the stress on Mr McEneaney’s family who were present in court.

Counsel continued that a psychologist the defendant was seeing had passed away over Christmas, but the defence hoped to be ready by the next sessions for a sentence hearing.

Judge Dara Hayes extended his sympathy to Mr McEneaney’s relatives.

"You shouldn’t have to to be here. I’m sorry that you are,” he said.

The court requested Victim Impact Statements the next day.
