Gabor Hoff loses unfair dismissal claim over gender remarks

By Donal Gilhooly

This report is a localnews.ie summary based on public court reporting and records; sources are listed below.

Gabor Hoff’s unfair dismissal claim over remarks about women working in a warehouse was dismissed by the Workplace Relations Commission, in a decision reported on 17 December 2024.

The complaint followed his dismissal from Lidl’s distribution centre in Charleville, Co Cork. Lidl said Hoff had made comments that women should not work there and that he did not hire women; Hoff disputed aspects of the account and said his words had been misunderstood.

The adjudicator found dismissal was one of the reasonable responses open to the employer, citing Hoff’s existing warning for inappropriate gender-related comments and recent dignity-at-work training. The claim was dismissed as not well founded.
